Which CPAP machines work with which masks and hoses?

Which CPAP machines work with which masks and hoses?

The complete UK compatibility guide to CPAP devices, masks, and tubing what connects to what, where universal standards apply, where proprietary connectors create restrictions, and how to avoid expensive mismatches.

CPAP equipment compatibility is one of the most common sources of confusion for both new and experienced therapy users. The good news is that mask compatibility is almost entirely straightforward a single universal standard governs almost every mask connection point on the market. The more complex story involves hoses and heated tubes, where a mix of universal and proprietary connectors creates genuine compatibility restrictions depending on which device and which features you are using. This guide covers every combination clearly.

The Foundation: How the CPAP Circuit Connects

Before exploring individual device and mask compatibility, it helps to understand the three connection points in a CPAP circuit and which standards govern each. This mental map makes every specific compatibility question much easier to answer.

CPAP DEVICE AirSense / DreamStation Air outlet port Device outlet PROPRIETARY or 22mm standard (device dependent) Delivery Hose / Tube (~180 cm) via integrated humidifier Mask elbow UNIVERSAL 22mm ISO standard fits virtually all masks Swivel elbow MASK INTERFACE Any brand, any type 22mm port = universal Generates pressure Carries pressurised air Delivers to airway ① Device outlet = sometimes proprietary  |  ② Mask elbow = universal 22mm on all standard hoses
A CPAP circuit has two key connection points: ① where the hose meets the device (standard 22mm on most devices, proprietary on heated tubes and the AirMini) and ② where the hose meets the mask swivel elbow (universal 22mm on virtually all masks from all brands).

The single most important thing to understand about CPAP compatibility is this: the mask-to-hose connection is virtually universal across all brands and mask types. Almost every CPAP mask sold from ResMed, Fisher & Paykel, Philips Respironics, Löwenstein, and others uses a standard 22mm ISO connector at the mask port. This means any standard 22mm hose will connect to any standard mask, regardless of brand.

The complexity arises at the device-to-hose end, specifically for heated tubes. Standard 22mm hoses are also universal at the device end. But proprietary heated tubes the ResMed ClimateLineAir and the Philips DreamStation heated hose use brand-specific and in some cases even model-specific connectors that restrict which hose can be used with which device.

💡 The one rule that covers 90% of questions: any mask, any standard 22mm hose, any device. If you are using a standard unheated 22mm CPAP hose (the grey corrugated hose), it will connect to the outlet port of virtually any CPAP machine on one end, and to virtually any CPAP mask on the other. Brand does not matter. You can use a ResMed mask on a Philips machine, a Fisher & Paykel mask on a ResMed device, or a Löwenstein mask on any device you own. Universal 22mm = cross-brand compatible.

The Three Connector Types You Need to Know

🔗
Universal 22mm ISO
Standard diameter · Cross-brand

Used on all standard CPAP hoses at both ends, and on the mask port of virtually every mask from every manufacturer. The 22mm internal diameter is defined by ISO standard 5367. If both components have this connector, they are compatible regardless of brand. This covers the vast majority of everyday mask and hose purchases.

Proprietary Heated Tube
Brand & model specific · Not interchangeable

ResMed ClimateLineAir (for AirSense 10 and 11), Philips DreamStation Heated Tube (DreamStation 1 and 2 use different versions), and Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle tube all use proprietary connectors at the device end that carry both air and electrical connections for tube heating. These are not interchangeable between brands or in some cases between generations of the same brand.

🔌
AirMini Proprietary
ResMed AirMini only · Fully proprietary

The ResMed AirMini travel device uses a completely proprietary short hose with dedicated connectors at both ends device end and mask end. Neither end accepts a standard 22mm hose or standard mask elbow. Only AirMini-specific masks (AirFit N20, P10, F20, F30 with AirMini adaptors) and the AirMini short hose work with this device.

ResMed Device Compatibility

🫁
ResMed
AirSense 10 · AirSense 11 · AirCurve 10 · AirMini
AirSense 10 AutoSet / Elite / For Her
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ ClimateLineAir (AirSense 10) ✓ All 22mm masks any brand ✗ ClimateLineAir Air11 not compatible ✗ DreamStation tube not compatible
The AirSense 10 uses the original ClimateLineAir heated tube (the slimmer model, sometimes listed as “ClimateLineAir for AirSense 10”). The newer Air11 ClimateLineAir designed for the AirSense 11 uses a slightly different connector and is not compatible. The device outlet port is a standard 22mm connection for unheated hoses plus a secondary electrical port for the heated tube the two are combined in a single proprietary collar on the ClimateLineAir.
AirSense 11 AutoSet / For Her
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ ClimateLineAir Air11 ✓ All 22mm masks any brand ✗ AirSense 10 ClimateLineAir not compatible ✗ DreamStation tube not compatible
The AirSense 11 uses the updated ClimateLineAir Air11 tube, which has a revised connector design. This tube is not backward-compatible with the AirSense 10, and the AirSense 10 ClimateLineAir does not fit the AirSense 11. For unheated hoses and masks, the standard 22mm compatibility is identical any mask from any brand connects normally.
AirCurve 10 VAuto / CS PaceWave / ST-A
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ ClimateLineAir (AirSense 10 version) ✓ All 22mm masks any brand Full face mask recommended for bilevel therapy
AirCurve 10 devices use the same ClimateLineAir heated tube as the AirSense 10 (not the Air11 version). All standard masks are compatible. Clinically, full face masks are generally preferred for bilevel therapy due to the higher pressure differentials involved, but nasal masks and nasal pillows are also compatible with the device connectors.
AirMini (Travel CPAP)
✗ Standard 22mm hose NOT compatible ✗ Standard mask elbow NOT compatible AirMini short hose only AirMini-specific mask adaptors required
The AirMini is fully proprietary at both connection points. It requires the AirMini short hose (included with device) and AirMini-compatible mask connectors. Compatible masks when used with the correct AirMini adaptor include the AirFit N20, AirFit P10, AirFit F20, and AirTouch F20. The HumidX waterless humidifier element fits inside the AirMini mask connector there is no traditional water chamber humidifier. No standard 22mm hose or elbow will connect to the AirMini at either end.

Philips Respironics Device Compatibility

⚠ Note on the Philips Recall (2021 onwards): Philips issued a major recall of DreamStation 1, CPAP Pro, BiPAP, and other devices due to degradable foam concerns. Many devices have been replaced under the recall programme. If you have an affected Philips device, check your recall status at the Philips recall portal before purchasing accessories. DreamStation 2 and newer devices are not affected by the recall.

DreamStation 1 · DreamStation 2 · System One
DreamStation 2 Auto CPAP / Advanced
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ DreamStation 2 Heated Tube ✓ All 22mm masks — any brand ✗ DreamStation 1 heated tube NOT compatible
The DreamStation 2 uses a revised heated tube connector that is not interchangeable with the DreamStation 1 heated hose, despite both bearing the DreamStation name. The device does, however, accept any standard 22mm hose without restriction, and connects to any 22mm mask from any manufacturer. Check that your heated tube specifically states “DreamStation 2” compatibility before purchasing.
DreamStation 1 Auto CPAP / BiPAP / Pro
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ DreamStation 1 Heated Tube ✓ All 22mm masks — any brand ✗ DreamStation 2 heated tube NOT compatible ⚠ Recall affected — check status
DreamStation 1 devices accept the original DreamStation heated hose (sometimes listed as “Heated Tubing for DreamStation”). The DreamStation 2 tube uses a different connector and will not seat correctly. As with all devices, any standard 22mm unheated hose and any 22mm mask are fully compatible.
System One (REMstar) Series
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ System One Performance Tube ✓ All 22mm masks — any brand Older platform — being phased out by NHS services
System One devices use their own Performance Tube for heated delivery, which is not compatible with DreamStation tubes. Standard 22mm hoses and all 22mm masks work normally. System One devices are an older generation being retired from NHS equipment services in many regions check availability of replacement parts and accessories with your supplier.

Fisher & Paykel Device Compatibility

🌊
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
SleepStyle · Icon Series
SleepStyle Auto CPAP
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ SleepStyle Heated Breathing Tube ✓ All 22mm masks any brand F&P ThermoSmart tube provides auto-humidity
Fisher & Paykel’s SleepStyle device supports the F&P ThermoSmart heated breathing tube, which provides automatic humidity adjustment similar to ResMed’s Climate Control Auto. The ThermoSmart tube is not compatible with ResMed or Philips devices. Standard 22mm hoses fit the device normally, and all 22mm masks from any brand connect without issue.
Icon Series (Auto / Plus / Premo)
✓ Standard 22mm hose ✓ All 22mm masks any brand Integrated humidifier built-in (no separate chamber) Older platform check part availability
Icon series devices have a unique integrated humidifier design that is built directly into the device body. They accept standard 22mm hoses for air delivery and are compatible with all 22mm masks. The Icon does not use an external water chamber the humidifier is filled via an access panel on the device. Proprietary heated tubes from other brands are not compatible.

Mask Compatibility: The Universal Picture

As noted above, the mask-to-hose connection is virtually universal. But it is worth covering the few exceptions and nuances that do exist.

Standard Masks All Brands

The following mask ranges from major manufacturers all use standard 22mm swivel elbows and are compatible with any standard 22mm hose from any device:

  • ResMed: AirFit N20, N30, N30i, F20, F30, F30i, P10, AirTouch N20, AirTouch F20, Mirage series
  • Fisher & Paykel: Evora, Evora Full Face, Evora CapFit, Brevida, Vitera, Eson 2, Simplus
  • Philips Respironics: DreamWear (Nasal, Full Face, Nasal Pillow, Gel), DreamWisp, Amara View, Amara Gel, ComfortGel, Wisp
  • Löwenstein (Weinmann): Joyce series all use standard 22mm connection
  • Hans Rudolph, Circadiance, Innomed: All use standard 22mm at the mask port

Masks With Special Considerations

ResMed AirFit N30i and F30i Top-of-Head Connection
Standard 22mm but the hose connects at the top of the headgear, not the mask frame

The N30i and F30i use a unique “top of head” tube routing design where the 22mm hose connects at the crown of the headgear rather than at the front of the mask. The connector itself remains standard 22mm, so any 22mm hose connects normally. However, this routing means the hose runs along the top of the head, which affects how it interacts with pillows and how it can be managed while side sleeping. The mask body connects to the headgear via a different internal pathway this component is specific to the N30i/F30i system.

Philips DreamWear Series Under-Nose Frame with Top Tube
Standard 22mm but tube routes through headgear via a proprietary frame pathway

The DreamWear nasal, nasal pillow, and full face masks also route the tube through the headgear to the top of the head. The tube connection to the headgear uses a standard 22mm port, but the internal pathway through the DreamWear frame to the cushion is specific to the DreamWear system. This means you can use any standard 22mm hose with a DreamWear mask, but you cannot mix DreamWear headgear with non-DreamWear cushions or non-DreamWear frame components.

ResMed AirMini Compatible Masks
Standard masks but require an AirMini-specific connector adaptor

Several ResMed masks can be used with the AirMini, but only with a dedicated AirMini mask connector (a short adaptor that replaces the standard swivel elbow). Compatible masks include the AirFit N20, AirFit P10, AirFit F20, AirFit F30, and AirTouch F20. The standard elbow must be removed and replaced with the AirMini adaptor. Without this adaptor, the mask will not connect to the AirMini short hose. These same masks used with their standard elbows work normally on any standard CPAP device.

The Full Compatibility Matrix

The table below summarises which hose types work with which devices at a glance.

CPAP Compatibility — Three Key Facts 🔗 Masks are Universal Any 22mm mask from any brand works with any device via a standard 22mm hose. Except: AirMini (proprietary) Heated tubes are Brand-Specific ClimateLineAir = ResMed only. DreamStation tube = Philips only. Even within brands, generations may not be interchangeable. Standard 22mm hoses: still universal 🔌 AirMini is Fully Proprietary Nothing standard fits the AirMini. Requires its own short hose and AirMini mask adaptors for each compatible mask model. Travel device only — not primary CPAP
Three rules that cover the vast majority of CPAP compatibility questions: masks are universal (22mm standard), heated tubes are brand and model specific, and the AirMini is fully proprietary at both connection points.

Buying Replacement Parts: What to Check

When purchasing replacement masks, hoses, or accessories, the following checklist prevents the most common compatibility errors.

Component What to Verify Universal or Specific?
Standard CPAP hose (unheated) 22mm diameter — virtually all are standard Universal — any device, any mask
Heated tube Confirm exact device make AND generation (e.g. AirSense 10 vs 11) Device-specific — do not mix brands or generations
CPAP mask (full face, nasal, pillow) Confirm 22mm port (virtually all standard masks) Universal — any brand, any standard device
Mask cushion or pillow insert Must match the specific mask model and size (brand and model specific) Mask-model specific — not interchangeable
Mask headgear Must match the specific mask model (some share headgear within a brand range) Generally mask-model specific
Swivel elbow Standard 22mm elbows are universal; AirMini elbows are proprietary Universal (22mm) or AirMini only
Humidifier water chamber Must match the specific device model (ResMed HumidAir fits AirSense 10 and 11; different from AirCurve) Device-model specific
AirMini accessories Everything must be AirMini-specific — hose, mask adaptor, HumidX Fully proprietary — AirMini only
📋 When in doubt, note the exact model name from the label on the underside of your device. Compatibility errors almost always result from specifying the brand (e.g. “ResMed”) without specifying the device generation (AirSense 10 vs AirSense 11). The model name and serial number on your device label are the definitive reference. Your CPAP supplier can confirm compatibility for any specific combination before you purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a ResMed mask on my Philips DreamStation?
Yes with a standard 22mm hose. All ResMed masks use the standard 22mm connector at the mask port, and all Philips DreamStation devices accept a standard 22mm hose at the device outlet. The combination works perfectly. The only scenario where this would not apply is if you were trying to use a ResMed ClimateLineAir heated tube between a ResMed mask and a DreamStation device the heated tube would not fit the DreamStation outlet port. With a standard unheated hose, any ResMed mask works with any DreamStation device without restriction.
My NHS CPAP device has been replaced with a newer model will my old mask still work?
Almost certainly yes, as long as your old mask uses a standard 22mm connection which every standard CPAP mask does. Regardless of whether your new device is from the same brand or a different one, your existing mask will connect normally via a standard 22mm hose. The only situation where your mask may not work is if your new device is a ResMed AirMini (which requires its own proprietary adaptors) or if you have a very unusual mask with a non-standard connector (extremely rare). If your new device comes with a new hose, your old mask connects to the new hose exactly as it did to the old one.
I want to use a heated tube with my device how do I find the right one?
Identify your exact device make and model from the label on the underside of the machine for example, “ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet” or “Philips DreamStation 2 Auto CPAP.” Then search specifically for the heated tube designed for that device: ResMed AirSense 10 requires the “ClimateLineAir” (not the Air11 version); ResMed AirSense 11 requires the “ClimateLineAir Air11”; Philips DreamStation 1 requires the DreamStation Heated Tube; Philips DreamStation 2 requires the DreamStation 2 Heated Tube. If you are unsure, contact your CPAP supplier with the exact model name and they can confirm the correct tube before you purchase.
