Orders placed before the applicable cut-off time are normally dispatched the same day, subject to stock availability, payment authorisation and any required prescription or verification.

Our UK delivery services are selected with the aim of delivering your order on the next working day after dispatch. Delivery times can occasionally be affected by courier delays or circumstances outside our reasonable control.

1. Same-Day Dispatch

We offer same-day dispatch on eligible in-stock orders placed before the following cut-off times:

Monday to Friday: Order before 3:30 PM for same-day dispatch.

Saturday: Order before 10:30 AM for same-day dispatch.

Sunday: We do not dispatch orders on Sundays. Orders placed on Sunday will normally be dispatched on the next working day.

Orders placed after the applicable cut-off time will normally be dispatched on the next available dispatch day.

Same-day dispatch is subject to:

  • The product being in stock.

  • Successful payment authorisation.

  • A complete and accurate delivery address.

  • Any required prescription or medical documentation having been received and approved.

  • Any necessary order or security verification being completed.

Please note that dispatch and delivery are separate. Same-day dispatch means that your order is handed to the relevant delivery network that day; it does not constitute an absolute guarantee that the carrier will deliver the parcel the following day.

2. UK Delivery

We provide fast, tracked delivery for UK orders.

Orders dispatched by us are sent using a service selected with the aim of delivery on the next working day after dispatch.

Depending on the order value, size, weight, destination and nature of the products, we may use Royal Mail, DHL Express or another appropriate tracked service.

Tracking information will normally be provided once your order has been dispatched.

3. Orders Over £800 – Premium Delivery

For UK orders with an order value over £800, we normally use a premium next-working-day delivery service.

Depending on the order and destination, this will normally be:

DHL Express, or
Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed

This provides additional security and enhanced delivery service for higher-value orders.

Orders must still be placed before the applicable same-day dispatch cut-off and meet our normal dispatch requirements.

4. DHL Express / Special Delivery for Smaller Orders

If your UK order is below £800 but you would prefer us to use DHL Express or Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed, please contact us.

We may be able to arrange an upgraded delivery service on an ad-hoc basis, subject to availability and any applicable additional delivery charge.

Please contact us before placing your order or as soon as possible after ordering, as we may not be able to change the delivery service once your order has entered our dispatch process.

Email: info@cpapstudio.co.uk

Telephone: +44 (0) 7899 539620

We will be happy to advise you of the available options.

5. Next-Working-Day Delivery Aim

We select our UK delivery services with the aim of delivering orders on the next working day after dispatch.

However, unless you have specifically purchased or been allocated a carrier service that is expressly guaranteed, next-working-day delivery should be treated as a delivery aim rather than an absolute guarantee.

Occasional delays can occur due to:

  • Courier network disruption.

  • Severe weather.

  • Industrial action.

  • Public holidays.

  • Incorrect or incomplete addresses.

  • Remote delivery locations.

  • Exceptional volumes within the courier network.

  • Other circumstances outside our reasonable control.

If your order is particularly urgent, please contact us before ordering and we can advise whether DHL Express or Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed can be arranged.

6. Tracking Your Order

Once your order has been dispatched, you will normally receive a dispatch confirmation containing tracking information.

Please be aware that tracking may take several hours to update after a parcel has been handed to the carrier.

If your tracking has not updated for an unusual period or you believe your parcel has been delayed, please contact us and we will assist you.

7. Stock Availability

We aim to maintain accurate stock information on our website.

Occasionally, stock availability can change unexpectedly because of high demand, stock discrepancies, supplier delays or multiple customers ordering the same product within a short period.

If an item is unexpectedly unavailable, we will contact you and may offer:

  • An estimated dispatch date.

  • An appropriate alternative, subject to your agreement.

  • Partial dispatch of available items.

  • Cancellation and refund of the unavailable item.

We will not substitute a materially different product without your agreement.

8. Delivery Address

Customers are responsible for ensuring that the delivery address supplied when placing an order is complete and accurate.

Please carefully check your:

  • House or building number/name.

  • Street.

  • Town or city.

  • Postcode.

  • Country.

  • Telephone number.

If you discover an address error after ordering, please contact us immediately.

We will make reasonable efforts to correct the address before dispatch, but we cannot guarantee that an address can be changed once an order has entered the fulfilment or courier process.

Additional costs resulting from an incorrect or incomplete address supplied by the customer may be payable by the customer where legally permitted.

9. Missed Deliveries & Uncollected Parcels

If nobody is available to receive a parcel, the delivery carrier may:

  • Attempt delivery again.

  • Leave the parcel in an authorised safe place.

  • Deliver to a neighbour where permitted.

  • Redirect it to a collection point.

  • Hold it at a local depot.

  • Return it to CPAPstudio after unsuccessful delivery attempts.

Please follow the instructions provided by the delivery carrier.

Where a parcel is returned to us because it was not collected, delivery was repeatedly unsuccessful or an incorrect/incomplete address was supplied, reasonable additional shipping or return-to-sender charges may apply where legally permitted.

10. Damaged Deliveries

If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please take photographs of the outer packaging before opening it, where possible.

Please then check the contents carefully.

If the product is damaged or something is missing, please contact us as soon as reasonably possible and provide:

  • Your order number.

  • Photographs of the external packaging.

  • Photographs of the product.

  • A photograph of the shipping label where possible.

  • Details of any damaged or missing items.

Please retain the packaging until we confirm that it is no longer required, as the courier may require photographs or packaging information when investigating the shipment.

11. Delayed or Lost Parcels

Occasionally, parcels may be delayed while travelling through the courier network.

A tracking delay does not necessarily mean that a parcel has been lost.

If your parcel has not arrived within the expected delivery period, please contact us and we will investigate with the delivery carrier where appropriate.

Where a parcel is confirmed as lost in transit, we will arrange an appropriate resolution in accordance with your applicable consumer rights.

12. International Shipping – DHL Express

We use DHL Express for international orders.

DHL Express provides tracked international delivery to many destinations worldwide.

International delivery times vary depending on:

  • Destination country.

  • Customs clearance.

  • Local customs requirements.

  • Import documentation.

  • Remote-area delivery.

  • Local holidays.

  • Regulatory requirements.

You will normally receive DHL tracking information after your order has been dispatched.

Please note that international delivery estimates do not include delays caused by customs clearance or action required from the recipient.

13. International Customs, Import VAT & Duties

International shipments may be subject to import VAT, customs duties, taxes, brokerage charges or other fees imposed by the destination country or courier.

Unless specifically stated otherwise when you order, these charges are the responsibility of the recipient and are not included in the product price or shipping charge.

CPAPstudio does not determine or control the amount charged by overseas customs authorities.

Customers are responsible for complying with the import requirements of the destination country and for responding promptly to any requests from DHL or the relevant customs authority.

14. Customs Delays, Refused Shipments & Unpaid Duties

International deliveries can occasionally be delayed while awaiting customs clearance.

The recipient is responsible for providing information or paying import duties/taxes requested by DHL or the destination country's customs authorities.

If a shipment is refused, abandoned, not collected or returned because the recipient:

  • Refuses to pay applicable import duties or taxes.

  • Does not complete customs clearance.

  • Does not provide information requested by DHL or customs.

  • Refuses delivery.

  • Provides an incorrect or incomplete delivery address.

the shipment may be returned to CPAPstudio.

Where a refund is applicable after the goods have been safely returned to us, reasonable costs actually incurred as a result of the failed delivery or return may be deducted where permitted by law. These may include original international shipping costs, return-to-sender charges, customs charges, carrier charges and other direct costs associated with returning the shipment.

This does not affect your statutory consumer rights.

15. International Import Restrictions

Customers placing international orders are responsible for checking whether the products they are ordering can legally be imported into their destination country and whether any prescription, licence or other documentation is required.

Where we are aware of a shipping or regulatory restriction, we may contact you before dispatch or cancel an affected item and issue an appropriate refund.

16. Multiple-Item Orders

Orders containing multiple products may occasionally be dispatched in more than one parcel.

This may be necessary because of product size, weight, stock availability, courier restrictions or prescription/documentation requirements.

If your order is split, you may receive more than one tracking number.

17. Returns

This Shipping & Delivery Policy covers the dispatch and delivery of orders.

For information about returning a product, including change-of-mind returns, faulty products and hygiene-sensitive medical products, please see our Returns & Refund Policy.

Oxygen Toxicity Explained: Risks, Symptoms, & Safety

Oxygen Toxicity Explained: Risks, Symptoms, & Safety

Everything you need to know about the risks of excess oxygen who is affected, how to recognise the warning signs, and how to use supplemental oxygen safely.

Oxygen is essential to life but like most things in medicine, too much of it carries real risks. Oxygen toxicity is a condition that occurs when the body is exposed to higher concentrations of oxygen than it can safely tolerate, and understanding it matters whether you are a healthcare professional, a patient using supplemental oxygen, or simply someone curious about respiratory health.

What Is Oxygen Toxicity?

Oxygen toxicity (sometimes called oxygen poisoning or hyperoxia) refers to the harmful effects that occur when tissues are exposed to oxygen at higher partial pressures than normal. Under everyday conditions, the air we breathe contains approximately 21% oxygen a concentration that human physiology has evolved to handle. When that concentration rises significantly, either through supplemental oxygen therapy or in environments such as hyperbaric chambers or diving, cellular damage can result.

The underlying mechanism involves the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) unstable molecules that damage proteins, lipids, and DNA within cells. The lungs, central nervous system, and eyes are the organs most vulnerable to this process, and the severity of the damage depends on both the concentration of oxygen and the duration of exposure.

It is worth noting that oxygen toxicity is not typically a risk for people breathing normal air, even at high altitudes. The condition becomes relevant in specific clinical and environmental contexts primarily where oxygen is being administered or breathed in concentrated form.

Fig. 1- The oxygen toxicity risk spectrum. At normal atmospheric levels (21% O₂), the body functions safely. As the fraction of inspired oxygen rises through supplemental therapy into high-concentration ranges, the risk of pulmonary, CNS, and ocular toxicity increases progressively. The three organs most commonly affected  lungs, brain, and eyes are shown with their associated presentations.

The Three Main Types of Oxygen Toxicity

Pulmonary Oxygen Toxicity
Most common form affects the lungs with prolonged high-concentration exposure

Also known as the Lorrain Smith effect, pulmonary oxygen toxicity develops when the lungs are exposed to high oxygen concentrations over extended periods. It typically begins with airway irritation and a dry cough, progressing to chest pain, reduced lung capacity, and in severe cases, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This form is most commonly seen in intensive care patients receiving mechanical ventilation with high inspired oxygen fractions.

Central Nervous System (CNS) Toxicity
Rapid onset associated with high-pressure oxygen breathing, including hyperbaric environments

CNS oxygen toxicity (the Paul Bert effect) occurs more rapidly than the pulmonary form, typically when breathing pure oxygen at elevated pressures most commonly encountered in professional divers using rebreather equipment or in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Symptoms include visual disturbances, ringing in the ears, nausea, muscle twitching, and in the most serious cases, tonic-clonic seizures. In a diving context, CNS toxicity can be immediately life-threatening.

Ocular Oxygen Toxicity
Most significant in premature infants retinal damage from excess oxygen exposure

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the most well-documented form of ocular oxygen toxicity, and it is a leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. It occurs when premature infants are exposed to high oxygen concentrations in neonatal intensive care, causing abnormal blood vessel growth in the developing retina. In adults, ocular toxicity is less common but can occur with prolonged exposure to high oxygen partial pressures, primarily in hyperbaric contexts.

Who Is at Risk?

Oxygen toxicity is not a concern for most people in everyday life. The groups most likely to encounter it are those in specific clinical, occupational, or recreational contexts where oxygen concentrations above normal are involved.

Group Context Risk Level
ICU / ventilated patients Prolonged mechanical ventilation with high FiO₂ High
Premature neonates Supplemental O₂ in neonatal intensive care High
Scuba / rebreather divers Breathing elevated pO₂ at depth High (CNS)
Hyperbaric therapy patients 100% O₂ at elevated pressures (HBOT) Monitored risk
COPD patients on oxygen Risk of hypercapnia with excess O₂ Moderate
Home oxygen therapy users Low-flow supplemental O₂ at prescribed rates Low when prescribed
📋 Important note for COPD patients: People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease require careful oxygen management. Unlike most patients where a target SpO₂ of 94–98% is appropriate, COPD patients are typically managed to a target of 88–92% to avoid suppressing their hypoxic respiratory drive. Excessive oxygen in COPD can worsen carbon dioxide retention (hypercapnia) and cause respiratory failure. Always follow your clinician’s prescribed flow rate precisely.

Recognising the Symptoms

The symptoms of oxygen toxicity vary significantly depending on which organ system is affected and the rate of exposure. Being able to recognise early warning signs is particularly important for anyone using supplemental oxygen at home, in a hyperbaric context, or in a clinical environment.

Pulmonary symptoms (gradual onset)

  • Dry, persistent cough that worsens over time
  • Tightness or discomfort in the chest
  • Shortness of breath that is disproportionate to activity
  • Hiccups an often-overlooked early indicator
  • Reduced exercise tolerance and fatigue
  • In severe cases: cyanosis, rapid breathing, confusion

CNS symptoms (rapid onset, especially at pressure)

  • Visual disturbances tunnel vision, flashing lights
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Muscle twitching, particularly around the face and lips
  • Dizziness, disorientation, or sudden anxiety
  • Tonic-clonic seizures in serious cases a medical emergency

Fig. 2- Symptom timeline and safety checklist. Early warning signs (dry cough, chest tightness) can progress rapidly to serious and potentially life-threatening presentations if oxygen exposure continues unchecked. The safety guidelines in the lower panel summarise the key actions for anyone using supplemental or therapeutic oxygen.

Oxygen Toxicity in the Context of Home Oxygen Therapy

For the majority of people using supplemental oxygen at home in the UK whether prescribed for COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, heart failure, or sleep-disordered breathing oxygen toxicity is not a significant everyday concern when equipment is used correctly. Home oxygen concentrators typically deliver oxygen at low to moderate flow rates, well within safe therapeutic ranges.

The risk increases when users deviate from their prescribed settings for example, by increasing flow rates to manage breathlessness, using oxygen continuously rather than as directed, or using equipment that has not been properly calibrated or maintained.

Safe use of home oxygen: key principles

  • Always use the flow rate prescribed by your respiratory specialist or GP never increase it without medical advice
  • Follow the schedule specified for your therapy: continuous, nocturnal, or ambulatory use as directed
  • Keep your oxygen equipment serviced and maintained by a registered provider
  • Monitor your blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) with a pulse oximeter if advised report persistent readings below 90% or above 99% to your clinical team
  • Store oxygen equipment safely, away from heat sources and flammable materials
  • Attend all follow-up appointments so your oxygen prescription can be reviewed as your condition changes
💡 Pulse oximetry and home monitoring: A pulse oximeter is a simple, non-invasive device that measures the percentage of haemoglobin in the blood carrying oxygen (SpO₂). For most adults, a healthy resting SpO₂ is between 95% and 99%. If you are prescribed home oxygen, your clinician will advise on target ranges specific to your condition. Monitoring your SpO₂ regularly helps ensure your therapy is within the therapeutic window neither under-oxygenating nor placing you at risk of hyperoxia.

Oxygen Toxicity and Hyperbaric Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurised chamber at pressures above normal atmospheric levels. It is used clinically for conditions including carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, certain wound-healing disorders, and radiation injury. Because the partial pressure of oxygen in HBOT far exceeds normal levels, sessions are carefully time-limited and medically supervised specifically to manage the risk of toxicity.

In the UK, HBOT is available through NHS specialist centres and some private providers. If you have been referred for hyperbaric treatment, the clinical team will conduct a thorough assessment and explain the toxicity monitoring protocols used during your sessions. Contraindications and session duration are strictly managed to minimise risk.

Prevention and Safety Guidelines

Whether you are a patient, a carer, or a healthcare professional, the following principles underpin safe oxygen use and minimise the risk of toxicity:

  • Prescribe and use the minimum effective dose oxygen should be titrated to achieve the target SpO₂ for the individual’s condition, not administered at maximum flow by default
  • Avoid prolonged breathing of 100% oxygen unless in an acute clinical emergency with close monitoring
  • Monitor regularly pulse oximetry and arterial blood gas measurements guide appropriate oxygen titration in clinical settings
  • Adhere to dive planning limits if using oxygen-enriched breathing gases for recreational or professional diving
  • Never self-prescribe supplemental oxygen always seek a formal assessment from a respiratory specialist before starting or adjusting oxygen therapy
  • Report new or worsening respiratory symptoms promptly if you are already using oxygen therapy
🚨 Emergency: when to call 999 If you or someone using supplemental oxygen develops sudden severe shortness of breath, chest pain, loss of consciousness, or seizures, call 999 immediately. Do not attempt to adjust oxygen settings yourself in an emergency wait for emergency services and tell them the person is using supplemental oxygen.

The Role of Respiratory Equipment in Safe Oxygen Delivery

Modern respiratory equipment from portable oxygen concentrators and CPAP machines to pulse-dose delivery systems is designed with safety in mind. Well-maintained, clinically appropriate equipment delivers precisely controlled oxygen concentrations, reducing the risk of inadvertent hyperoxia. This is why sourcing equipment from registered medical suppliers and having devices serviced regularly is so important.

For people managing sleep-disordered breathing alongside oxygen dependency, equipment such as auto-adjusting CPAP and BiPAP devices can be configured to work alongside supplemental oxygen feeds. This combination therapy requires careful clinical oversight to ensure both the airway pressure and the inspired oxygen concentration remain within safe, therapeutic parameters throughout the night.

If you have questions about the compatibility of your CPAP or respiratory equipment with supplemental oxygen, speak with your sleep specialist or contact a registered respiratory equipment supplier for guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can using a CPAP machine cause oxygen toxicity?
No a standard CPAP machine does not deliver supplemental oxygen. It works by providing pressurised room air (approximately 21% oxygen) to keep the airway open during sleep. Oxygen toxicity is not a concern with CPAP alone. Some users with coexisting respiratory conditions are prescribed an oxygen feed into their CPAP circuit, but this is done under clinical supervision with specific flow rate guidance. If you are using supplemental oxygen alongside CPAP, your respiratory team will monitor your therapy to ensure it remains within safe parameters.
Is it possible to get too much oxygen from a home concentrator?
Theoretically yes, but in practice it is uncommon when equipment is used as prescribed. Home oxygen concentrators typically deliver oxygen at flow rates of 1–5 litres per minute through nasal cannulae, which results in an inspired oxygen concentration well below the levels associated with toxicity in most users. The greater risk comes from using a higher flow rate than prescribed, using oxygen for longer periods than directed, or using it without an appropriate clinical indication. If you have concerns about your oxygen prescription or notice new symptoms, contact your GP or respiratory team rather than adjusting the equipment yourself.
How is oxygen toxicity treated?
The primary treatment is reducing or removing the source of elevated oxygen exposure as quickly as possible under medical supervision. In mild pulmonary cases, this is often sufficient to allow gradual recovery as the lungs heal. In more severe presentations such as ARDS or CNS seizures hospital management is required, which may include ventilatory support, anticonvulsant medication, and close monitoring of blood gases and organ function. Recovery from mild to moderate pulmonary toxicity can take days to weeks. Prevention, through careful oxygen titration and monitoring, is far preferable to treatment.
